guest artist: clark orr
I met fellow designer Clark Orr In 2009. I'd admired his work for a while before knowing that he was responsible for it. After we met we quickly became friends and discussed the similarities in our styles, a common love for vintage graphics, punk and street culture. Around the same time the demand for the Benny Gold brand was getting too large for me to handle on my own. I asked Clark if he could help out with a few graphics. Clark is the first person ever to create a graphic for the Benny Gold brand other than myself. I am grateful for his assistance over the years—he’s had a hand in getting us to where we are today, thanks Clark!
It was inevitable that Clark would have a go at our guest artist series. The official Benny Gold x Clark Orr Design Co. glider series collaboration is now available in our online store here.
Below is a mini interview we did with Clark to give you a little background on his design process and what inspires him.
1. HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN DESIGN / ART?
My father is a sign painter, so I grew up around graphics my whole life. I didn’t find an interest in it however, till I got into skateboarding and comic books. I wanted to be a part of the punk rock scene, but wasn’t a musician. So I tried my hand at drawing and digital art by making show posters and band shirts. The rest is history.
2. FAVORITE SHIRT GRAPHIC OF ALL TIME?
Powell Ripper, by VCJ
3. WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
Vintage/ retro graphics. Particularly for commercial items: labels, matchbook covers, packaging, and so on.
4. IS THERE A DESIGN OUT THERE THAT YOU WISH YOU DID?
My buddy Benjie Escobar’s “Atom Face” for The Hundreds. I know it’s so simple, but brilliant, fun, and iconic.
5. WHAT'S LEFT ON YOUR DESIGN BUCKET LIST?
Apparently creating a bucket list.
