I studied art and design in college with plans to one day become a self-published comic book artist. In the meantime I started a hardcore band that needed artwork. So I started making shirts and designing our album covers etc. That snowballed into doing that for friends and their bands which snowballed into doing that for larger independent labels. Fast forward several years and I never did make that comic book.
All the Pushead stuff for Metallica in the 80s.
I take a great deal of inspiration from music. There’s a connective feeling I get when listening to music and creating art simultaneously. It engages another one of my senses to draw from.
One of my favorite albums and album covers of all time is Depeche Mode’s Violator. It’s so simple, iconic and captures such a specific mixture of feeling.
A whole world of things are still on my design bucket list. I’m still searching for that one idea that spawns a thousand ideas from it. Although if I never find it I’ll be okay to just continue exploring and searching. I’m excited to keep growing and pushing myself to new areas. I’m sure there are paths that I’m not even aware of that I will love to venture down. Not having a defined plan allows for mystery and surprises and I think I prefer it that way.
